About Us

Med Biotech Laboratories (MBL) is an autonomous biomedical research institution, a non-government institution legally registered in Uganda as a not-for-profit entity. MBL was conceived with the conviction that the private sector in Africa can play a critical role in biomedical research and training alongside the traditional government institutions (universities, ministries, etc). Specifically, "we wanted to serve as a role model for private sector involvement in the business of health research...". With a long History going 10 years back, MBL has consolidated its position as a national and international research institute in its own right.

MBL collaborates with the Ministry of Health and affiliated hospitals and health centers and other national institutions such as Makerere University, Mbarara University, the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology, and the National Agricultural Research Organization in research projects on malaria, HIV-1/AIDS, cassava, and environmental biotechnology.

MBL headquarters are located in Muyenga, Kampala. It also has laboratory facilities in Apac and has presence in Lira.

The major goals of Med Biotech Laboratories (MBL) are to set up an infrastructure for high-technology biomedical research in Uganda, to facilitate technology transfer and capacity building in biotechnology and medical research, and to undertake goal-oriented and focused research on diseases of importance in Uganda.
